In October a MakeCharity.com team comprised of Leandro Brisola, Niall Clifford, Ben Ashwell and Nick Rawdon-Jones, successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain at 5,892 metres, in aid of the Reciclar Institute for young people.

The aim of the trip was to raise awareness and vital funds for a hugely important project. You can still help by making a small donation to the charity on www.JustGiving.com/reciclar where you can also leave your message!

All donations will go towards helping kids and young adults in dire need of education and employment.

The Reciclar Institute

The "Instituto de Reciclagem do Adolescente" (Adolescent recylcing institute) – RECICLAR was founded in 1995 with the objective of breaking the vicious cycle of poor education > low employment potential > social risk and crime > poor education, in which many young people of Nova Jaguaré, in São Paulo find themselves in. To them, the braking of this cycle means, in practice, the vision of a future abundant with possibilities and perspectives.

The applied methodology aims to awaken these youngsters’ potential and focus their minds on values such as: group exercises, ethics, citizenship and social responsibility. Such concepts allow them to recognize their rights and responsibilities within a society.

In addition to providing the opportunity of a first job, the institute also offers food and academic support through lessons in Portuguese, mathematics, general knowledge and IT as well as educational seminars, cultural and social activities that help in the constructive development of adolescents in becoming respectable adults.

The mission:

The Institute’s mission is to provide the opportunity for education, a first step towards a professional apprenticeship and social interaction for adolescents in critical areas.

The project:

The Institute produces and sells a number of recycled products where all sales proceeds are directed towards the development of the local area as stated above. In 2007, 120,000 products such as books, picture frames and diaries were produced from these recycling workshops by recycling some 12 tonnes of paper.

Aknowledgement:

In 2007, “The Reciclar Institute” was nominated to take part in the Business Guide to Partnering with NGO’s and the United Nations for the UN’s Global Compact.

The Institute is one of six Brazilian NGO’s to take part in this guide whose objective is to support global companies to identify trustworthy organisations with which to work in partnership with.

The community:

Children and young adults, between the ages of 14 and 19, living in the community of Vila Nova Jaguaré in the State of São Paulo in Brazil in state education. The selection is made in partnership with the schools and their continuation in the program is subject to frequent assessments of their behaviour and performance at school.
